The Beginning of the Roll

Today I picked up a roll of film that I had developed. Its B&W shot with a borrowed Rollei. Here are frames 3, 5, and 8 from the roll.

This was a special roll for me. I began shooting this roll of film in January of 2007 and finished it last month. This Rollei was the first camera I ever used to make a picture. Sure, I'd had many camera's before this one and taken many snap shots in my life but I had never considered photography... never studied an image. This roll with this Rollei was the first time I ever really thought about photography. It was lent to me by someone I love who slowly and patiently taught me about reading, wrangling and dancing with light. He showed me books and how to study the masters.

So these images are special to me. They may not be great but they are the 3rd, 5th, and 8th images I ever took as a photographer.

Darfur Rally, April 13, 2007

Punam Kaji with the White Rose Society for Holocaust Education & Genocide Awareness places a message in a hand painted bottle at the "Hope is Global" Darfur Rally at the Texas State Capitol on April 13, 2007. The bottles contained a message for U.S. and international government agencies allocating resources to the peace keeping efforts in Darfur and Chad. The message - provide twenty four vitally needed helicopters to effectively police the areas of fighting and violence and help protect the villages and IDP camps from militias who do have helicopters.

One of the speakers was an activist, Caesar Ricci who had visited the IDP camps. He introduced two young girls now living and going to school in Austin who's families had been killed by the Janjaweed.
